Welcome to the Institute of Mercy website
Institute on mercy
To foster a global culture of unity, compassion, and understanding, inspired by the Abu Dhabi Declaration’s (2019) call for interreligious dialogue centered on an interplay of Justice and Mercy, the initiative of the World Interreligious Meeting on Justice and Mercy’s (WIMJM) process and the project of establishing the Institute on Mercy (IoM) seek to promote human Dignity and Fraternity by embracing the rich diversity of religious traditions, grounded in mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the common good.
Institute on mercy
The aim is to express, through the respective religious doctrines, the fecundity of Justice and Mercy in all our relationships.
This IoM consists in Research, Formation and Counseling, in a multi-religious format inspired by the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity and the Abrahamic Family of Abu Dhabi.
A scientific committee will help foster this network, aiming to reach out to the peripheries through cultural centers and pluri-religious Witnesses of Mercy worldwide.
« We have an urgent need to enter into mutual mercy. A "common word" that comes to us from God invites us to do so. It is indeed the richness of His mercy that is revealed when we humbly open ourselves to the insights that the faith of the other offers us, and even more, to the way they live it. This exodus toward the other cannot divert us from the Promised Land if it is true that our paths converge when the same thirst draws us to the same well. Can we quench each other's thirst? It is by the taste of the water that we can tell. The true living water is that which no one can make spring forth or contain.
The world would be less of a desert if we could recognize a shared vocation: to multiply fountains of mercy along the way. And how can we doubt this shared vocation if we allow the All-Merciful to call us together to a single table, the table of sinners? O you good people of the Book, let us come to our common vocation. The treasure of God is a Bread that can only be savored with the multitude. » (Blessed Christian de Chergé, Tibhirine, Algeria)
Our vision emphasizes the alternativity of Justice and Mercy as complementary forces that guide humanity towards reconciliation and solidarity. Justice upholds fairness and accountability, while Mercy transforms relationships through forgiveness and compassion, reflecting the sacred dignity inherent in every person. Through this project, we aim to facilitate the religions' role in building bridges among faiths, fostering fraternity by witnessing the God of mercy. Together, we envision a world where justice and mercy harmonize to overcome division, alleviate suffering, and inspire acts of charity, creating a shared path toward peace, hope, and the flourishing of all.
The matter is to enrich each other with our experiences and spiritual traditions of Justice and Mercy. The aim is to understand other religions and the role they may play together serving human beings and Creation, at the service of Human Fraternity.
As a matter of fact all creation and humanity exist in a relationship of interdependence. This is fundamental to interreligious dialogue. We are working with partners from other faith traditions to promote justice, mercy, peace, fraternity and the integrity of the whole of creation.
By the way, we consider “important to clarify that interreligious dialogue neither seeks nor aims to bring about a universal religion. Indeed, the goal underlying interreligious dialogue is to engage with and reflect on the theological significance of the existence of “the other” or “others” in terms of religious belonging.” (Called to Dialogue, ECC) Dialogue makes it possible to realistically consider that each religion has got its own vision on religious diversity. “Dialogue does not erase distinctions: the other “remains the other”. Yet we are called to provide a theological account of this otherness and of the relationship we maintain with it. Even these “others,” after all, are part of God’s creation.”

“Celebrating Mercy with Believers of Other Religions is a concise and simple compendium, edited by the Pontical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, mainly addressed to Bishops’
Conferences and through them, to all Catholics. At the same
time, we would be pleased if this proves useful to believers of
other religions.”
